Social connection, hospitality values, security

For the few of you who have no idea what AirBnB is, it is a website for people to rent out lodging, with destinations ranging from Venice to Bangkok to San Francisco (where it was originally headquartered), and offers streching from lodging in treehouses to lodging in castles or barges.
The website’s core values are social connection, hospitality values, security, and that sweet feeling of « belonging to a community »; basically find « home abroad ».

A sucess story

Thus explaining the company’s success in the lodging market, its originality – although other companies like Gîtes de France already offered a similar service – backed up by a solid communication strategy (see the « Create AirBnB » functionality for instance, in which the participants could show their original take on the new AirBnB logo or the #Waterstones sleepover on Twitter) have made AirBnB grow considerably : it has lodged over 20 Million guests since 2008, hosts over 800 thousand listings, has hit an over 425 thousand record of guests and has been translated in 42 languages.
AirBnB is a communication success story, to help fund the site, the founders created special edition breakfast cereals, with presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain as the inspiration for “Obama O’s” and “Cap’n McCains”. In two months, 800 boxes of cereal were sold at $40 each, which generated more than $30,000 for the company’s incubation and attracted Y Combinator’s Paul Graham. hence, « Be a cereal entrepreneur » is now one of the company’s core values.

Brand’s mailing campaigns

One of ISCOM’s former students is now working at AirBnB, in the OMG (Online Marketing Group) mailing department. His job is to create beautiful eye-catching e-mails for the brand’s mailing campaigns and use eye and click-tracking technology to calibrate them best to reach as broad an audience as possible, and cater as specifically as he can to the mail recipients.
